The first time i've watched Submarine, I liked so much, that i've watched everyday for four days straight.
'' Most people think of themselves as individuals, that there is no one on the planet like them. This thought motivates to get out of bed, eat food and walking around like nothing's wrong. My name is Oliver Tate ''
Oliver Tate ( Craig Roberts ) is a boy who sees the most unusual angles, he reads the dictionary and controls how long his parents didn't have sex : 7 months.
He prefers to be alone, it gives him time to think
its a bit of affectation.
'' I don't quite know what I am yet. I've tried flipping coins, listening exclusively to french crooners, I've even had a brief hat phase but nothing stuck ''
Jordana ( Yasmin Paige ) is different, she doesn't talk about herself and is moderately unpopular. Oliver ponders the possible relationship between them.
One day Jordana asks Oliver to find her after school, with his Polaroid camera and a diary. When he gets there, she asks him to kneel down and to close his eyes, and then she kiss him while she's taking photos of them.
'' I asked if she my girlfriend now, she said she would think about it. But what she meant was yes. we was now as one ''
I love Oliver and Jordana relationship, is all about how love should be. The honesty and empathy, without blackmail and no expectation of return, no shame and no requirement, with charisma and affection.
The young love, the discovery.
Oliver and Jordana became a couple now.
'' Jordana and I enjoyed an atavistic, glorious fortnight of lovemakin', humiliatin' teachers and bullying the weak. ''
All Thursday night the Oliver's parents, Jill (Sally Hawkins) and Lloyd (Noah Taylor), go to the cinema.
Oliver calls Jordana to go to his house, she asks if he is making the proposal to them have sex, he responds by saying
'If I say yes, decreased the chances of you want?' She tells him to write down the reasons for her to go, he had already written it on his hand palm.
They have sex.
' Dear Jordana. Thank you for letting me explore your perfect body. I could drink your blood, you are the only person that I would allow to be shrunken down to a microscopic size and swim inside me in a tiny submersible machine. We have lost our virginity but it wasn't like losing anything. You are too good for me, you are too good for anyone. Sincerely, Oliver. '
Oliver is constantly thinking about the relationship of his parents. He debate and raises hypotheses with himself that his mother is betraying his father, with Graham (Paddy Considine) they neighbor, who is his mom ex boyfriend. He started to doubt after seeing his mother enter Graham's van.
' I can imagine my mom calmly leaving one day, and my dad helping her to pack ''
Oliver tells his father about seeing his mother with Graham. Lloyd insists they are only friends, and everything is alright
He wanted to share with Jordana his concern for his parents, but Jordana's mom has cancer. He didn't want to upset her with the break up of his parents, she already had things to worry about . Oliver stay in silence.
He is concerned with the possible break up of his parents, and with the possible death of the Jordana's mom.
Oliver get to know Jordana's parents before the possible death of her mother. He promises that will be in the hospital after surgery of her mother.
It's friday. Lloyd had promised Jill that he would go with her on the Graham speach about light. Oliver had promised to be in hispotal for Jordana's mom. Both won't go.
Lloyd is marine biologist, and always have the feeling of being underwater, depressed and tired.
Jill admit that in a moment of weakness and drunkness, she give Graham a hand job. And she is sorry. Lloyd is upset, but not so much, he says worse things happen at the sea.
Jordana is upset with Oliver, she sends him a letter saying that she is now with someone else. Everything between them it's over.
This is the most painful part. Oliver succumbed within, the love is over. For two months he has to see Jordana with her new boyfriend. The cinematic part of their romance captivates me so much. Things that were not said take the place of the demonstrated feelings
The soundtrack of the movie (will be linked at the end) matches each symbology of the images and feelings.
'' I don't know if I've come of age, but I'm certainly older now. I feel shrunken, as if there's a tiny ancient Oliver Tate inside me operating the levers of a life-size Oliver-shaped shell. A shell on which a decrepit picture show replays the same handful of images. Every night I come to the same place and wait till the sky catches up with my mood. The pattern is set. This is, no doubt, the end ''
Final scene
Both are on the same beach
Oliver come closer
Oliver: Ask me how deep the ocean is.
Jordana: Shut up.
Oliver: Come on, just ask me.
Jordana: Why?
Oliver Tate: 'Cause I know the answer.
Jordana: Oh! Do you?
Oliver: Yes, I do.
Jordana: How deep is the ocean?
Oliver: I'm not gonna say.
Jordan: I'm brokenhearted.
Oliver: The ocean is six miles deep.
Jordana: Good.
And then without saying another word, they look at each other.
Then there is forgiveness without saying anything else.
All the way that love go through, compiled in the epilogue.
Alex turner did the soundtrack for this film, so if you wanna check it out, here it is.
Hope you had a good one
